Try Anticipation

One of the key things I have learned over the years coaching from elementary kids to college kids is they need to be told to get to where the ball will be before the ball does.

I dont know how many frustrating drills I put up with, seeing players watch the ball drop and looking at me as a coach going it didnt come to me.

I soon realized that this one principle that is at the center of all the skills, was not being practiced or understood for that matter. Here are a few things to make sure your players know to improve this

Ready Position - your players need to know that even though the ball is in the oppositions court, you still need to be ready

Anticipate - teach your players to read what is happening and trust their instinct by reacting even prior to the play forming

Quick Feet - the faster you get to where the ball is going the better chance you have to make a good contact

Stay Low - all basic skills involve the body not being totally erect, its easy to extend and play a ball then to try and go down to get a ball

I believe if your players understand these principles as a young age, it will help them develop that much quicker! If only I would had been taught this when I was in elementary school.
